The Homerun Derby was Tonight?

by

As I was making dinner tonight, I was having a conversation with my husband about the two runs in the top of the first the Diamondbacks scored. I made a comment about the honeymoon period being over for the rookies. Oh, me of little faith. I have learned my lesson about not talking so blasphemous in my own house. I think they heard me and started ripping dingers. Holy cow, was it a hitting display by our boys in red!

As soon as I had opened my mouth, Yadi got a single in the bottom half of the first, and Holliday came up to bat and ripped a 2-run homer. Game tied 2-2. Okay, this could be a ball game.

Bottom of the 4th, singles started spreading around, Matt Adams tattooed one out, and Descalso dinged himself one. There’s a lot more scoring that went on, but I think it’s just as safe to say that everybody in the line up had some sort of contribution in tonight’s win. Score now: Cards 10, Diamondbacks 2.

Bottom of the 5th saw some back-to-back homerun-age (yeah, I know it’s not a word, but I’m adding it to the dictionary on here). Best dinger of the night award goes to…Shelby Miller! We all know what a great pitcher Miller is, but tonight, he did it with his bat. Don’t you just love it when pitchers hit homeruns? His was followed up with one by Matt Carpenter. Carpenter just didn’t want to be left out of the derby.

Siegrist came into the game tonight in relief in the top of the 7th, fresh out of the minors. He came into a not-so-pretty situation to help the Cards get out of a jam. He ended up facing 6 batters, giving up 1 single (not his earned run), got a guy to fly out, and struck out 4. Let me say this again–he struck out 4 of the 6 batters he faced. Welcome to the bigs, Kev.

Back to the homerun derby. Thanks to Dan McLaughlin’s insight (and the guy who handed him the paper in the booth), it was pointed out that this was the first time in Cardinals’ recorded history that the numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 hitters all hit a homerun. Maybe I should start making bad remarks of them more often. Next time, I’ll just talk louder so they can hear me.

Big bats, big win. Here’s to keeping the bats alive in Cincinnati!

Go Cards!
