Ambush Go Down Fighting In Season Finale

by Press Release

The St. Louis Ambush finished their inaugural season with a loss, but they went down fighting right until the last minute. Despite a halftime lead and a gallant effort, the Ambush fell to the Milwaukee Wave 16-12 Saturday night (March 1) at US Cellular Arena.

The Ambush got off to a 4-0 lead in the opening period, thanks to goals from Rich Schmermund and Kory Dowell. Dowell scored again in the first minute of the second quarter and Tenzin Rampa answered for Milwaukee less than two minutes later. Mike Roach scored for the Ambush and Marcelo Fontana for the Wave to send the teams to the halftime break with St. Louis leading 8-4.

With the Wave’s Victor Quiroz in the penalty box for tripping, Kory Dowell completed the hat trick, a restart goal off a pass from Jeff DiMaria. Milwaukee would then launch a comeback with five straight goals. Marcio Leite got three in the third quarter and Quiroz added one in the third to give the Wave a 12-10 lead going into the final stanza. At 10:17of the fourth quarter, Milwaukee’s Nicolas Perera found himself unmarked near the goal, allowing him to take a pass from Quiroz and find the net to give the Wave a 14-10 advantage.

At 13:58 of the fourth, Ambush goalkeeper Greg Crook was called for pushing, giving the Wave a two-minute powerplay. Corey Adamson then finished the season just the way he started it for the Ambush. Adamson scored the franchise’s first ever goal on opening night then scored the team’s last one of the season, a short-handed tally, with less than a minute remaining in the game. Adamson’s goal reduced Milwaukee’s lead to 14-12 with just 26 seconds remaining in the contest. With St. Louis still a man short due to the two-minute penalty, Leite was able to get by goalkeeper Crook and shoot a short pass to Ian Bennett, who tapped it in for the last goal with just 10 seconds left on the clock.

Crook, playing in his third MISL game, made 16 saves on 24 attempts. Wave goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra saved 11 on 17 chances. The victory gives the Wave a 16-3 record with one regular season game left to play and finishes the inaugural season for the Ambush at 4-16. The Wave prepare for their final regular season game against the Missouri Comets on Sunday, followed by the playoffs, while the Ambush will begin the off-season process of assessing and evaulating team needs with the goal of being in a playoff position this time next year.
