Gateway Grizzlies starting pitcher Aaron Newcomb has been selected by Pointstreak as the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week.

Newcomb, a right-hander from Carlyle, Ill. struck out four batters and walked only two in eight shutouts innings Saturday night in the Grizzlies’ 1-0 win over Traverse City.

He threw 97 pitches while notching the win in a game that lasted 1:56. The only Traverse City hit was a third inning single by second baseman Rob Benedict.

Newcomb, 24, spent two years in the Angels system after getting drafted in the 19th round in 2012. He played his High School baseball at nearby Centralia High School.

“It was fun to watch,” Grizzlies manager Phil Warren said after Newcomb’s performance. “This was the first time I have seen Aaron in our uniform. We’ve heard good things and knew what he was about as far as what type of pitcher he is. It’s fun to watch your pitcher go out and perform like that.”

The Grizzlies will have an off day Monday before starting a three-game series with the Joliet Slammers on Tuesday. It’s 101 ESPN Night, a Military Tuesday and the first MVP Program Night of the season. First pitch is set for 7:05.
