Grizzlies Power Past Rascals For Series Win

The Gateway Grizzlies collected a season-high 17 hits in a 10-6 drubbing of the River City Rascals Sunday at TR Hughes Ballpark.

The win gave the Grizzlies their third series win in three series and their fifth win in their last six games. Gateway (7-2) currently has the best record in the league. tuckerjensen

For the fourth straight game Gateway jumped in front with runs in the first inning. Madison Beaird picked up an RBI double, Niko Vasquez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Richard Seigel hit a solo home run to give Gateway a 3-0 lead.

Seigel delivered again in the third inning with an RBI single to give the Grizzlies a 4-0 advantage.

Seigel finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

River City (5-4) scored two runs, one unearned, in the bottom of the third inning against Grizzlies starting pitcher Tucker Jensen to draw within two. Johnny Morales brought in a run on a single and another run scored on a Gateway error.

Gateway scored at least one run in each of the next four innings to a take a 10-2 lead before River City scored four runs in the seventh inning to draw within four.

Jensen (2-0) allowed six runs (four earned) in six and two thirds innings while picking up the win. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked three.

All nine batters in Gateway’s lineup recorded at least one hit. Seigel, Tommy Richards, Beaird, Ben Waldrip, Xavier Macklin and Gabriel Molina all picked up two hits while Jonathan Johnson paced the Grizzlies with three hits and three runs.

The Grizzlies head back home on Memorial Day for an early 12:35 P.M. first pitch against the Frontier Greys at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Ja’Vaun West (1-0) gets the start for the Grizzlies.
