The Gateway Grizzlies allowed a season-high in runs Friday night in a 15-9 loss against the River City Rascals at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The Grizzlies loss moved them into a tie for first place with the Rascals in the West Division.

After the Grizzlies took a 1-0 second inning lead on a Ben Waldrip double play groundout, River City (19-11) erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Hansen and Hector Crespo picked up run-scoring singles and Saxin Butler belted a grand slam to give River City a 6-1 lead.

Hanson drilled a two-run home in the third inning, his first as a pro, to extend the lead for River City to 8-1.

Gateway (20-12) hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to draw within four runs. Niko Vasquez hit a two-run homer and Waldrip followed with a solo blast to make it 8-4.

The Grizzlies scored an unearned run in the fifth inning on a Jonathan Johnson RBI single, but River City posted their second six-run inning of the game in the fifth to take a 14-5 lead.

Gateway starting pitcher Ja’Vaun West (4-1) took the loss, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) in four and a third innings.

A two-run Michael Wing home run and a Madison Beaird RBI double gave the Grizzlies three runs in the sixth inning. A Hernandez RBI single in the ninth inning finished off the Grizzlies scoring.

Vasquez went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Gateway offense.

Gateway will now play a split-city day-night doubleheader Saturday against River City. Game one of the day is at 12:05 at GCS Ballpark. Right-hander Tyler Thompson will make the start for the Grizzlies.
