The Southern Illinois Miners came back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth, but two late runs in the eighth by Traverse City sent the Miners to the loss at Rent One Park by a final score of 5-4 against the Beach Bums.

Traverse City took a 3-0 lead through four innings on home runs by Greg Harisis and Jeff DeBlieux before the Miners started their comeback. After managing just one baserunner through the first four innings against Traverse City starter Ian MacDougall, Jared McDonald worked a one-out walk before Steve Marino connected on his first hit of the series, an RBI double to left-center field to make it 3-1. Two batters later, with two outs, Marino was then driven in by Matt Howard on an RBI single to cut the deficit to a single run.

In the sixth, a leadoff walk by Ryan Cavan and an RBI triple by Frank Martinez to right field tied the game at 3-3 and chased MacDougall from the game. Marino then came up with one out after McDonald drew another walk and hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field to give the Miners the lead at 4-3.

That’s the way it stayed until the eighth, with the Miners bullpen working around baserunners until the Beach Bums rallied. With two outs and runners on first and third, a double by Josh Miller scored both runners as Traverse City took the lead back 5-4. The Miners then went down in order in the next two frames against closer D.J. Johnson to suffer the loss and end their four-game winning streak.

The Miners still won the series, however, and won all three series on their nine-game homestand by 2-1 counts to go 6-3 in that span. The team will now head to Washington for a three-game series against the Wild Things, starting with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. central time on Wednesday night. The Miners, who trail the Wild Things by two games for first place in the East division standings, will pitch Matt Bywater and Miguel Ramirez in the doubleheader, opposed by Scott Dunn and Zach LeBarron, respectively, for Washington.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
