Everyone knows about the Cardinals-Royals I-70 rivalry, but the Missouri Comets and St. Louis Ambush resume their own Battle for I-70 supremacy tonight. The Missouri Comets have been the class of the MASL in its inaugural season, posting a 10-0 record. Meanwhile, the Ambush seem to have finally found their footing, winning 2 of their last 3.
St. Louis got their biggest win of their latest incarnation last weekend when they took down the prestigious San Diego Sockers 8-3. For their role in the victory, as well as a hard fought loss in Chicago 5-4 the night before, keeper Greg Crook and defender Chris Mattingly were named to the MASL team of the week for Week 10.
Missouri enters tonight’s contest coming off a mentally and physically draining 8-7 shootout victory in Milwaukee on New Year’s Eve. In the contest the Comets let a four goal lead evaporate with Milwaukee scoring 5 goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Comets will be without their Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski as he serves his one game suspension for being sent off with a red card in the Milwaukee game.
The Comets will also be without forwards Max Touloute (groin) and Ramone Palmer (hamstring) and defender Coady Andrews (ankle).
This will be Ambush forward Stefan St. Louis’ first time out against his former team. St. Louis was part of the Missouri Comets team that won the MISL title last year and beat the Ambush in all four meetings.
Forward Leo Gibson leads the way for the Comets with his 41 points (20 Goals, 21 assists) which leads the league.
The Family Arena should be packed tonight, as St. Louis always draws a good crowd, and Missouri historically travels well and they haven’t slapped that $40 toll on crossing I-70 yet.
