Notes from the Squared Circle: WWE Appreciation

by

Forgive me for not posting for almost a month, I really wanted to review a Lucha Underground card but have not been able to catch an episode yet, but the show must go on and as I have stated, the card is always subject to change.

Today I thought I would talk about how much I have been enjoying WWE’s main roster these last few weeks. If you have been paying attention, something has really clicked for the undercard and they are being allowed to have better, longer matches that really show case their talent.

Let’s start with the New Day. I have been a Kofi Kingston fan for a long time. Maybe it is because his matches with Randy Orton stick out to me but I always felt this is a guy who could be a top draw if his physique was just a bit bigger. And I think Xavier Woods is one of the best mouth pieces in the game right now. He just as a distinct voice that carries well and you can tell he is comfortable with a mic in his hands. Something Kofi has not been given a lot of time with. And finally there is Big E. A guy who twenty years ago would be feuding with HBK but as of today still needs to work some rust off. Don’t get me wrong, he is a pretty solid wrestler, but the roster is a bit over saturated with monsters right now like Rusev, Ryback, Rowen and Harper, so playing a role of the strong enforcer works for him right now. Together these three form one of the most balanced stables I have ever seen.

When I heard rumors of a Kofi heel turn to join form a stable I was excited. But when the stable finally debuted they seemed to come off as baby faces. Nobody bought it. It wasn’t interesting. I think that is because smarks (someone who reads rumors and gossip on sites other than the WWE) like myself wanted them to be heels. It took a few months but we got there. And now we have some of the best heel work in the tag team division. This is not just a powerful team who destroys other superstars to get heat, this is a team that knows how to talk down to cities and baby faces to get the boos, and they cheat to win. The New Day is the epitome of a perfect heel faction.

With great heels, comes great baby faces in Tyson Kidd and Cesaro. At one point in time this was the heel tag team. Kidd was playing off his jealousy of Natalya but when New Day turned, so did these guys. They aren’t really playing up the good guy role sorta speak because I feel they are just playing the role for this feud. But honestly I don’t care what role they play. The 2 out of 3 falls match at Payback between these two teams is easily one of the best tag team matches I have ever seen. I saw unique moves, great story telling and a creative finish to keep the feud going strong. These are the guys that should be fighting ever PPV just to get the crowd hot. I felt really sorry for Ryback and Bray Wyatt who had a pretty decent match but had to follow the show stealer.

Daniel Bryan going down to injury hurts every wrestling fan of all ages. He is easily a crowd favorite; one of the most popular guys this industry has ever seen. I hope this is not the end but at least we got WrestleMania 30 if it is. That leaves the door wide open for someone to grab the now vacant IC title. With the Elimination Chamber coming next week, it should be a great way to propel someone to the top of the card. The Elimination Chamber is kind of like the King of the Ring, a sure fire way of getting someone over. I personally hope it goes to Ryback. I feel he deserves a run with singles gold, even if it is short lived.

Finally I want to touch on the main event picture as of right now. Dean Ambrose fighting for the WWE World Championship makes me so happy. He is a modern day HBK who can have great matches with anyone and is easily one of the best performers on the main roster. His match on Raw a couple weeks ago against Seth Rollins was the type of match I wish they had in their fall of 2014 feud. It was a PPV quality match that I have watched twice. I also have to say he was one of the most enjoyable parts of the fatal four way at Payback. Him and Roman Reigns have a good ol’ fashioned baby face brawl was great storytelling. And speaking of Roman Reigns I think a lot more people are getting behind him because he is no longer being treated as the chosen one. I think a lot of people (myself included) were worried he was going to be the guy to take down Lesnar and we didn’t want a pure muscle guy at the top again. This gives him more time to work on his move set and mic skills to convince me that he should main event another WrestleMania. And of course there is Seth Rollins. A heel I love to hate. The perfect heel in my opinion. He is not like Bray Wyatt who I actually cheer for. He has found the perfect balance of making me respect him as a performer while at the same time just wanting someone to drill his head into the mat and take his championship away. Without Rollins holding the top title, the main event picture becomes very dull.

Join me next week as I preview the Elimination Chamber WWE Network exclusive.
