Honors even for Saint Louis and Pittsburgh

Same teams, same score again. Just a different location as Saint Louis FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds tied their second game of the season against each other 1-1 at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

It was a similar story for Saint Louis as they once again had their chances to put the opponents to the sword yet just couldn’t find the final defense splitting pass or had a good phase of possession only to make a wrong decision when it mattered most.

After a scoreless first half, it was the Riverhounds who scored first, STLFC defender Chad Vandegriffe was adjudged to foul Stephen Okai in the box and USL leading scorer Rob Vincent scored from the spot kick. Mark Pais got close to the kick that was low to his left, reminiscent of the save he made in the shootout last week against Minnesota United.

For the second time in a week the Saints had to come from behind on the road, and did just that after 80 minutes, as forward Jermie Lynch looped his header into a gaping net from a pinpoint Mike Ambersley cross that left the goalkeeper flailing in no mans land.

“What an incredibly gutsy performance from the guys,” Head Coach Dale Schilly said after the game. “They endured extremely difficult travel situations yesterday. The point we earned was done on will, fortitude and a selfless commitment to their teammates.”

Saint Louis are 3-4-3 in Eastern Conference play with 13 points. They return home this Saturday, June 13  hosting the Harrisburg City Islanders at Marshall Wireless Stadium. Kickoff is set off for 7:30 PM.
