Beach Bums’ Offense Battles Back To Beat Gateway

by

The Gateway Grizzlies allowed an early lead to slip away as the Traverse City Beach Bums rallied to win 8-3 on Wednesday evening at Wuerfel Park.

The Grizzlies (7-17) started the night with a bang, when first baseman Ben Waldrip blasted a three-run homer to put Gateway up 3-0 in the first inning. It was Waldrip’s fourth home run of the season.

RHP Vincent Molesky (2-2) allowed Traverse City (13-9) to scratch across one run in the bottom half of the first to make it 3-1. The score would stay that way until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the Beach Bums rallied to tie the game against Molesky. Shane Rowland led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a run-scoring base hit by Sam Bumpers. Traverse City’s Jay Austin immediately followed with a double, which plated Bumpers and tied the game at 3-3. Traverse City jumped on top in the sixth when outfielder Brandon Jacobs popped a solo shot over the left field fence to give the Beach Bums a 4-3 advantage.

Gateway reliever David Murillo came on in relief of Molesky and struggled in the seventh. Jose Vargas lined an RBI single which was followed by Yazy Arbelo’s three-run homer. Traverse City ultimately scored eight unanswered runs to pull away with an 8-3 lead.

After allowing an early home run, Beach Bums’ starter Anthony Montefusco (1-2) settled down and allowed just three runs in six innings of work. RHP Bret Dahlson followed with three scoreless innings on the mound. After collecting two hits in the third inning, the Grizzlies’ offense only mustered one more base runner during the remainder of the game.

Gateway’s Blake Brown contributed to the offense with two hits against Montefusco.

The Grizzlies and Beach Bums play the final game of their three-game series tomorrow evening at Wuerfel Park. RHP Max Schonfeld (1-1, 2.95 ERA) makes the start for Gateway. The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN’s digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF. Sam Levitt will call the action.
