Notes from the Squared Circle: Divas “Revolution”

by

For many months now, especially after AJ Lee quit abruptly, the WWE universe have been clamoring for the NXT divas to make the jump of the main roster. I have openly admitted in past articles that the divas match have bored me and seem to be lacking energy. Watch any of the top four divas (I’m including Bayley) in NXT and any casual wrestling fan can see that they are the most talented women in wrestling today. It doesn’t help that the NXT divas gets 10-20 minute matches on NXT Takeovers. Meanwhile, we get three minute matches on Raw between the same three divas and people begin feeling the Cena affect with a whole division. Which brings us to the 7/13 episode of Raw where the WWE Universe got their wish in the most uninspired way possible.

I was more excited by idea of the sudden surprise appearance of Charlotte and Becky Lynch to save Paige when nobody else would step up. Instead we got Stephanie McMahon introducing the divas like she’s the hero who brought the Divas up. Can I remind everyone Stephanie is a part of a faction called “The Authority”, this is a heel faction that should not be cheered. The segment involved getting in Nikki Bella’s face, proudly proclaiming an uprising and doing the thing a lot of fans have criticized Triple H for doing, and that is inserting themselves into the hottest storylines. From this point on, the debut of the three most talented divas will forever be linked with Stephanie McMahon and for what reason? It was a lazy style of writing to introduce three characters and it really took the moment away for me.

Now that I got that off my chest, is this really a revolution? Cliché answer here but time will tell. I think what needs to happen is Charlotte, Becky and Sasha need to break out of the shadow of Paige and Naomi and wrestle each other more than the already established divas. The matches have already been stellar and the triple threat match at Battle Ground featuring two of the new main roster divas was a match that has been missing from the big league for a long time coming. The closest thing we got from it was AJ and Paige for a few matches, but even that got lost in the shuffle with the weird, lesbian obsession thing they were dancing around because of the PG Era.

I am just as excited about the new immersion of women’s talent on the main roster but it wasn’t organic and didn’t make a lick of sense. The three women who are now on the main roster aren’t even aligned. And there are still six women who were feuding before they were called up. How is this a revolution?

Calling this a revolution is a cheap marketing ploy for something that hasn’t happened yet. All this really did was create three factions of divas which could get interesting if written the correct way but we have not seen good writing for the women in many years now. Although I will give Nikki the benefit of the doubt. Her character is playing a classic heel without having to be crazy. The point I am trying to make is that I cannot wait for the  day we get Charlotte vs Sasha in a 15 minute PPV match. Then we have a revolution.
