WWE Champion Seth Rollins tears ACL, MCL

by

At Wrestlemania 31 in San Francisco this past March, then-current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns were facing off in the main event for the very title Lesnar was holding. During the ending of the match, with both men down, Seth Rollins entered the ring to cash in his “Money in the Bank” briefcase, which gave him a free title shot whenever he wished.

In the end, Rollins pinned his former partner Reigns for the title as the 70,000+ crowd was in shock.

Ever since that moment, Rollins has been the champion, beating every opponent ranging from Kane, Lesnar (whom wasn’t pinned originally when he lost the title in March), and even the iconic Sting in a brutal match at Night of Champions. But as it’s ever so obvious, the world of professional wrestling is a dangerous one, and especially with the wrestlers on the road over 300 days a year, injuries occur… some more severe than others.

On Wednesday at a live event in Dublin, Ireland, Rollins suffered what was originally deemed to be a minor injury while wrestling a match against Kane. However, the following day, it was announced he had suffered not only a torn ACL, but a torn MCL and medical meniscus.

The injury will leave the 29-year old out of action anywhere between six to nine months.

With the injury to Rollins, he will be relinquishing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, ending the young star’s seven month reign as champion.

On this past Monday’s episode of Monday Night Raw, Reigns defeated Kevin Owens, Alberto Del Rio, and Dolph Ziggler in a Fatal-Four Way match to determine the number one contender for Rollins’ title.

Due to the title being relinquished, WWE will be holding a tournament at the 29th-annual Survivor Series PPV event on November 29th in Atlanta, Georgia. The wrestler who emerges victorious in the tournament will be crowned as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

This is the second major injury suffered by a wrestler among the “top-tier” ranks in WWE. St. Louis native Randy Orton has been out of action indefinitely with nagging shoulder issues which have plagued him in recent months.
