Goaltenders Brian Elliott and Semyon Varlamov combined for 73 saves on 75 shots, but Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche came out on top with a 2-1 shootout victory.

Alexander Steen and Nathan MacKinnon each tallied a goal during regulation while Gabriel Landeskog scored the only shootout goal to lift the Avs.

After the shootout loss, the Blues pick up a point and sit at 28-15-8 for 64 points. St. Louis sits one point back from Dallas for second place in the Central Division, but the Stars have three games at hand.

Following a scoreless first period where both goalies shined for 18 save, the Blues finally got on the board in Varlamov’s one blemish of the night 37:57 into the game.

In Colorado’s defensive zone, Carl Soderberg tried to lift the puck out of his zone, but Troy Brouwer knocked the puck out of the air. Brouwer made one moved before sliding it to Steen who took a shot that trickled through Varlamov’s pass to make it 1-0.

Colorado answered in the third period as the Avs found a way with the extra attacker.

With just over a minute left to play and an empty net for Colorado, Francois Beauchemin sent a pass through the slot to the other side to Tyson Barrie. Barrie wheeled and moved toward the blue line before sending the puck right back, this time to Matt Duchene. With Elliott moving back and forth between the pipes, Duchene found a streaking MacKinnon near the back post for the goal.

The goal tied the game up at one as the game went to overtime in which both teams still were unable to break the draw.

In the shootout, Gabriel Landeskog swept in to Elliott’s left and hesitated to Landeskog’s left before switching to his back hand and scoring. The first attempt in the shootout ended up being the only conversion as the Avs went on to get two points.

The Blues enter their third game of the four-game road trip against the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday, Jan. 24.
