GLVC Women’s Basketball Quarterfinals Recap

by

The quarterfinals of the GLVC women’s basketball tournament went largely as expected. The four top seeds advanced, but it was the team that had the most trouble with their opener on Thursday that was surprising. After three largely uneventful games in the final game of the day, top seed and the only undefeated team in the GLVC during regular season conference play, Lewis, was taken to the brink of elimination by the eight seed, Indianapolis. It took a buzzer beater not going in and overtime, but the Flyers survived and advanced to the semis. The women took a day off as the men played their quarterfinals Friday, but they will be back in action on Saturday for the afternoon session.

12 p.m. – #2 Drury vs. #3 Bellarmine

Drury won their lone matchup during the regular season 84-66 at home on Feb. 6. The Lady Panthers used a 28-14 second quarter to build an insurmountable lead. Drury shot 42 percent for the game including 8-of-21 from three-point range while holding Bellarmine to just 34 percent from the field. If the Lady Knights are going to be the ones that keep Drury from repeating, they will need to slow down the best three-point shooting team in the country and do much better than their -7 turnover margin in the last matchup.

2:30 p.m.- #1 Lewis vs. #4 Quincy

The pair’s only meeting during the regular season came on Feb. 11 with Lewis winning 68-62. The Flyers won every aspect of the game from shooting percentage to rebounds to free throws. The only area the Hawks had an advantage was from three where they tripled the amount of makes Lewis had. The only problem was it took more than three times as many attempts to do it.
