Saint Louis FC Players Gain Experience Against SIUE

by Mick Lite

Saint Louis FC battled Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a scoreless draw on Saturday to wrap up the team’s preseason.

SIUE applied a lot of pressure to start the contest which caused some trouble for the visitors in the opening minutes.  Once settled in, both sides were able to create quality chances but neither team was able to break through.  Head Coach Dale Schilly said he was pleased to see the guys who played the majority of the game have to deal with the pressure applied by the Cougars.

The game also featured Academy players gaining valuable experience which will only provide quality depth and support for the first team as the regular season approaches.  “It’s important for them to get minutes in this sort of atmosphere so they know what it’s like to play with that level of pressure and the expectations of the pros playing next to them.” said Schilly.

Saint Louis FC will return to the training field this week and prepare for the start of the USL regular season.  Their first test will come on the road against the Real Monarchs SLC in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, March 26.

When asked what the team needs to do in training this week to put them in the best possible position heading into the opener, Schilly indicated they need to continue working on the details of how they want to defend and attack, as well as continuing to raise their fitness  levels.  “I think if we can get some guys healed and avoid any more injuries, we’ll be ready to go.” added Schilly.
