Grizzlies Swept By Crushers In Series Finale

by
Avon, Ohio – The Gateway Grizzlies fell to the Lake Erie Crushers 8-2 on Thursday night at All Pro Freight Stadium, as the Crushers earned a sweep in a series that saw the Grizzlies’ offense score a total of only four runs.

LHP Sasha Kuebel (1-3) started on the mound for Gateway (9-10) and pitched 4.2 innings while allowing five runs. In the first, Juan Avila delivered a two-out RBI single against Kuebel to give Lake Erie (11-5) an early 1-0 lead.

The Grizzlies responded immediately in the top half of the second against LHP Todd Kibby (2-1). Brandon Thomas singled with two outs while Sam Fischer followed with a base hit of his own. Vin Guglietti drove in Gateway’s first run with an RBI single to tie things at 1-1.

The teams continued to trade runs as Lake Erie scratched across a run in the bottom half of the second and Gateway received an RBI single from Blake Brown in the third to pull even at 2-2.

From that point, the Crushers offense took the lead in the fourth and never looked back. Lake Erie took a 3-2 edge in the frame on Brendan Constantino’s RBI single and tacked on another tally to make it 4-2.

Kuebel came out in the fifth as Grizzlies manager Phil Warren gave the ball to RHP Adam Eggnatz, who went 1.1 innings while allowing a run.
RHP Jon Pusateri pitched in the seventh and gave up a pair of runs, one of them being unearned. RHP Jordan Wellander continued his splendid work to begin the season by pitching a scoreless eighth. Wellander has yet to allow a run in 2016.
One positive for Gateway was some offensive balance, as seven different batters collected at least one hit.
The Grizzlies head to Joliet for the start of a three-game set against the Slammers beginning on Friday night. First pitch at Silver Cross Field is at 7:05 p.m. The Grizzlies send RHP Vince Molesky (1-0, 3.37 ERA) to the mound while Joliet counters with RHP Luke Crumley (0-1, 6.27 ERA).
The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Friday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt calls the action.
