DES MOINES, Iowa – The Memphis Redbird offense continued its swoon in a 6-1 loss to the surging Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) Sunday afternoon in Des Moines.

Iowa (28-26) has now won nine-straight games, and the Redbirds (22-32) have dropped four-in-a-row. For the second-straight day, the Redbirds had four hits that were all singles. Through the first two games of the series, Memphis has scored one run on eight hits, and over the last six games the Redbirds have plated a total of seven runs.

Jerome Williams was hurt by a pair of home runs in his debut as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization, but he got through 5.0 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Williams fanned six and walked three in his first outing after signing on Friday.

Matt Williams, who replaced an injured Alex Mejia, had an RBI infield single in the fourth for the only Memphis run of the game. The other Redbird hits came from Nick Martini, Patrick Wisdom and Alberto Rosario.

Martini scored Memphis’ lone run, and he has now scored a run in seven of his last nine starts.

Kurt Heyer, Corey Littrell and Juan Gonzalez followed Williams out of the Memphis bullpen.

Memphis and Iowa play twice more, with game three tomorrow night at 7:08 (CT) and the finale Tuesday at 12:08 p.m., and the Redbirds return to AutoZone Park to host Colorado Springs (Triple-A Brewers) Thursday-Sunday.

The upcoming homestand features a Yadier Molina Garden Gnome Theme Ticket and replica Redbirds jersey gate giveaway, as well as postgame fireworks, on Saturday, plus College Night and an all-you-can-eat crawfish buffet on Thursday. On Friday, the Redbirds will be giving away a cooler backpack at the gate, and the homestand closes with Prairie Farms Ice Cream Sunday and a chance for kids to run the bases on Sunday.
