Pitching Struggles As Gateway Falls To Normal

by
Sauget, Ill. – In a game where the Gateway Grizzlies found power in the form of two home runs, the Normal CornBelters also found their power stroke as they beat the Grizzlies 8-4 on Sunday evening at GCS Ballpark.

Grizzlies starter Will Landsheft (1-3) ran into trouble during the first inning, allowing a pair of singles followed by a three-run homer to Aaron Dudley to give Normal (11-16) a 3-0 lead.

Landsheft then retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced before another bump in the road. In the fourth, a walk to RJ Perucki followed by a single by Mike Fish set up Nolan Meadows for another three run shot.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies (10-18) chipped away against RHP Horatio Acosta (1-1). Blake Brown hit a solo homer in the second to make it 3-1 and Tyler Tewell popped a solo shot of his own in the fourth inning to make it a 6-2 deficit.

In a spot start, Acosta put together a quality outing. He went six innings, allowing onlytwo runs on five hits.

After Landsheft got through seven frames, Grizzlies LHP Jon Jones allowed a run in the eighth and RHP Will LaMarche surrendered another in the ninth.

The CornBelters used RHP Francisco Carillo and RHP Race Parameter to close out the game as they combined for three scoreless innings in relief.

After a day off on Monday, the Grizzlies head to Evansville, Ind. for the start of a three-game series on Tuesday night at Bosse Field against the Evansville Otters. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
The game can be heard in the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Tuesday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
