The St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball franchise claimed its sixth straight victory Saturday night with a 93-88 home triumph over Flyers Elite at UMSL’s Mark Twain Building.

With the five-point topper, St. Louis (7-1) claimed sole possession of first place in the Midwest Division of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL).

The Surge sported a 20-17 lead after the first quarter but the Elite outscored the locals 18-17 in the second quarter and narrowed St. Louis’ lead to 37-35 at intermission.

A strong third quarter was displayed and a 25-15 stanza was recorded by the Surge, resulting in a 62-50 advantage heading into the final frame.

To its credit, the Elite refused to surrender and narrowed the differential but the Surge was able to thwart a late-game comeback and finish the game with the five-point win.

St. Louis takes the upcoming weekend off and returns to UMSL for a July 9 match-up against Cleveland Crush.
