Luke Voit named Texas League Player of the Month

by Press Release

Springfield, MO – The Texas League has announced that Springfield Cardinals 1B Luke Voit has been named the Texas League Player of the Month for August. Voit is the second Cardinal to take a home a league monthly award this season, with RHP Luke Weaver winning the Player of the Month Award for June.

Just named a Texas League Postseason All-Star last Wednesday, Voit put together a dominant month of August in which he hit a league-best .366 (34×93) with four home runs and 20 RBIs through 26 games. Voit not only led the league in average, but also in on-base percentage and (.440) and on-base-plus-slugging percentage (1.320) while ranking 2nd in RBIs, extra-base hits (12), total bases (55) and slugging percentage (.591). Voit hit safely in 21 of his 26 games during the month, including 11 multi-hit performances. He began August with a six-game RBI streak, his longest of the season.

The Wildwood, Missouri native and former Missouri State Bear has been one of the best and most complete offensive players in the Texas League this season, currently hitting .298 with 19 home runs, 19 doubles, five triples and 72 RBIs through 130 games. In his first Double-A campaign, Voit is on pace to win the league’s batting title, leading the circuit in average, hits (139) and games, while ranking 2nd in on-base percentage (.375), tied for 4th in RBIs, 3rd in total bases (225), 4th in slugging percentage (.483) and tied for 3rd in runs scored (69).

Voit was also selected to the North Division Team for the 2016 Texas League All-Star Game, presented by Great Southern Bank, which was played at Hammons Field on June 28. Swinging away at his home park and where he played his college ball, Voit dramatically came from behind to beat Midland 3B Matt Chapman in the Bass Pro Shops Home Run Derby, providing one of the most memorable moments in Hammons Field history.
