Cardinals Power Past Braves in Spring Win

by

ST. LOUIS – Six different Cardinals had at least one RBI on Thursday to lead St. Louis to a 9-4 triumph over the visiting Atlanta Braves at Roger Dean Stadium. The victory was the Cards’ fifth in Grapefruit League play.

Adam Wainwright, a native of Brunswick, GA, did not fair well against his favorite childhood team in his first spring start of 2017. The Braves greeted the veteran righty with 3 first inning runs on Thursday, courtesy of homers from Dansby Swanson and Adam Walker II. Wainwright finished his afternoon going two innings and allowing three hits while striking out three.

A Matt Adams home run in the second inning cut the Braves lead to 3-1 and was the beginning of 8 unanswered tallies for St. Louis. The Cardinals would turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double from Jedd Gyorko and a 2-RBI single from Carson Kelly.

Paul DeJong, who spent 2016 in AA Springfield, launched a 3-run HR in the bottom of the sixth. Anthony Garcia added an eighth inning long ball of his own to give the Cardinals their 9th and final run of the afternoon.

Worth Noting:

Third baseman Jedd Gyorko finished 2-3 at the plate with one run driven in. Gyorko is amidst a spring battle with veteran Jhonny Peralta to win the starting role at third base.

Carson Kelly filled in at DH for Matt Carpenter on Thursday, who was scratched as a precaution due to lower-back stiffness. Carpenter is supposed to participate in the World Baseball Classic for the United States beginning next week.

Up Next:

The Cardinals will visit the Nationals on Friday at Washington’s brand new spring facility, The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. First pitch is slated for 12:05 local time, with Michael Wacha the scheduled starter for St. Louis.
