DES MOINES, Iowa – The division-champion Memphis Redbirds got back on the winning track with a 4-2 win over the Iowa Cubs (Cubs) Saturday night in Des Moines.
The Redbirds avoided their first four-game losing streak since April 13-16 with the win and improve to 85-48 on the season. Memphis is now 39-17 in its last 56 games.
Jack Flaherty picked up his fifth win in his last six starts with 5.0 innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits. He has now given up two earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts and is 7-2 on the year. Mike Mayers, Mark Montgomery, and Josh Lucas were outstanding in the final 4.0 innings, giving up just one hit and one walk.
Mayers struck out four in his 2.0 innings, and Lucas picked up his 15th save by finishing the ninth with two strikeouts.
Rangel Ravelo and Luke Voit homered for Memphis, and Voit finished 3-for-5. Breyvic Valera extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 1-for-5 contest.
The Redbirds led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, before the Cubs scored twice off Flaherty. But Voit’s homer was a seventh-inning insurance run, with the bullpen slamming the door on Iowa to wrap up the game.
The Redbirds and Cubs finish their four games in Des Moines tomorrow afternoon at 1:08. The series then shifts to Memphis for four games Monday–Thursday, starting at 6:35 p.m.Monday.
