Aledmys Diaz to Toronto for Who?

by Aaron Mullins

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded INF Aledmys Diaz to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for OF J.B. Woodman.

I am thinking the same thing… Who is J.B. Woodman?

He is an OF who as of last year was playing in A ball in Lansing, MI in the Midwest League in the Toronto farm system.  He was listed as the #28 prospect for the Blue Jays organization.

His scouting grades according to MLB.com

Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

What does this mean for the Cardinals?

Honestly?  Not too much.  The Cardinals Have a plethora of outfielders in their farm system (10 OF in their top 30 prospects)

He will get thrown into the mix in the minor leagues and will land around the 20-25 range in the Cardinals prospects list.

One idea is that he will be used as trade bait after all he will be hard pressed to get major league consideration in such a tough OF cast.

Diaz wasn’t going to get his fair share of playing time for the Cardinals with the emergence of SS Paul DeJong. Even after shifting to 3B, Diaz would have to beat out Gyorko and Carpenter for playing time. Shipping him to Toronto gives him the best chance to succeed.

He was a huge part in the Cardinals organization in 2016 and I wish him the best as a member of the Blue Jays.
