Although the number seven is considered lucky for some, it was not for the St. Louis Ambush, who dropped their seventh game of the season Friday night at the Family Arena. The Ambush are 0-7 on the season, while the Milwaukee Wave remained undefeated and improved to 6-0.
The Ambush lit up the scoreboard first when player/coach Hewerton sent a pass to Nestor Hernandez, who was able to shoot it into the back of the goal at 4:41. It would be the lone tally of the opening stanza, which ended with St. Louis on top 1-0.
Milwaukee drew even when goalkeeper Josh Lemos brought the ball up and beat Ambush goalkeeper Paulo with a long shot from near the yellow line at 3:36 of the second quarter. The Ambush scored a go-ahead goal when Stefan St. Louis took a pass from Clayton Matheus and hit the net near the post in the closing seconds of the half (14:15) to give the Ambush a 2-1 lead at the halftime break.
The Wave tied the match at 2:35 of the third quarter when Andre Hayne executed a perfect bicycle kick that sent the ball high and out of reach of Ambush goalkeper Paulo. Milwaukee took a 3-2 lead 19 seconds later on Drew Ruggles’ tally. Neither team scored again in the period, which expired with the visitors enjoying a one-goal advantage.
The fourth quarter would see only one goal and it was a big one for the Ambush. Matheus took a rebound of a Corey Adamson shot and fired it into the back of the net at 13:46, sending the contest into a ten-minute sudden death overtime period. Robert Renaud nailed the game-winner for the Wave at 4:23 of the extra period.
The Ambush and Wave will battle again when they meet in Milwaukee next Saturday, December 16 at 7:05 p.m. CT. The next night (Saturday, December 17) the Ambush return home to host the Cedar Rapids Rampage at 3:05 p.m. CT.
