by Brian Kunderman

Saint Louis senior guard Davell Roby scored a career-high 27 points and freshman guard Jordan Goodwin finished one point and one rebound shy of a triple-double, but George Mason shot a sizzling 65 percent in the second half to escape with an 86-81 victory over the Billikens on Saturday afternoon.

SLU falls to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. George Mason improves to 9-9 and 3-2 in league play.

Roby is now just five points away from 1,000 for his career. Roby’s career-best 27-point effort on Saturday came on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from 3-point range. He had 19 points in the first half alone.

Goodwin’s 11 assists were a career high. He finished with nine points and nine rebounds as he was looking to become the first Billiken in school history to record a triple-double.

Javon Bess chipped in 17 points and added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jalen Johnson scored 10 points, including a pair of key 3-pointers late in the game.

SLU’s 81 points were a season high. The Billikens also buried a season-high 11 3-pointers.

There were five ties and five lead changes in the game. SLU took a 39-38 advantage into halftime.

Up next, SLU hosts Duquesne on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
