Goodwin Posts SLU’s First Triple-Double in Billiken Win

by Brian Kunderman

History was made at Chaifetz Arena Wednesday night as the Billikens defeated Duquesne 76-63 in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup.

The Billikens improved to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the A-10. Duquesne fell to 13-6, 4-2.

Jordan Goodwin registered the first triple-double in SLU history, finishing with 13 points, a career- and game-high 15 rebounds and a game-high 10 assists. Goodwin also tied his career high for steals, leading all players with four thefts.

D.J. Foreman, who was 7-of-10 from the field, tied for game-high honors with a career-best 21 points. Foreman grabbed eight rebounds, equaling his high in a Saint Louis uniform.

Davell Roby became the 31st player in Billiken men’s basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Roby tallied nine points and a season-high-tying four assists.

Javon Bess (5-of-8 FG) tossed in 14 points and collected eight rebounds for the Billikens, whose 157 points in the last two games is their highest total in consecutive outings this season.

Rene Castro-Caneddy scored 21 points, Eric Williams Jr. had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Mike Lewis II netted 13 points for Duquesne.

The Billikens earned a 44-33 advantage on the boards and shot 50 percent from the field while limiting the Dukes to 32.8 percent. SLU outscored Duquesne 38-18 in the paint and 16-2 in fast-break points.

Duquesne jumped in front 6-2 on a pair of 3-pointers, but Saint Louis quickly grabbed control. Goodwin, who scored the Billikens’ first seven points, drained a 3-pointer and followed with two free throws for a 7-6 SLU lead.

After a Bess bucket put the Bills on top 16-7 at the 11:45 mark, Duquesne tallied five straight points to trim the lead to four. Saint Louis answered with a 13-4 run that featured scoring from four different players – led by Foreman’s five points – to take its largest lead, 29-16, with 3:36 remaining.

Duquesne pulled to within nine points twice, but a triple by Aaron Hines in the closing seconds gave SLU a 34-22 halftime cushion.

Saint Louis scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 41-22. The Billikens led by as many as 23 points on three occasions and saw the margin dip below 15 just three times the rest of the way.

The Billikens play at Massachusetts Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. (CT). The game will be carried on Facebook Live.
