Home Baseball Cardinals Scouting Lincecum

Cardinals Scouting Lincecum

by Aaron Mullins

Tim Lincecum is making a comeback. The “Freak” as he is often referred to, hasn’t pitched in the Major Leagues since 2016 with the LA Angels.  He didn’t fare particularly well, in fact it was rather horrendous to the tune of a 9.16 ERA over just 38.1 innings.

Although he struggled in his last couple seasons, over a dozen teams set out to watch Lincecum throw a showcase in Seattle. One of those teams… The St. Louis Cardinals.

Jon Heyman on Twitter

tim lincecum threw for 25-30 scouts this afternoon in seattle (at least 15 teams, likely 20). said to have thrown 90-93 mph, better than two years ago. chance for a job: improved.

Lincecum is one of many pitchers who lost velocity over their years in the Majors. In the beginning of his career he was averaging between 92-95 MPH on his fastball, but the last time he pitched for LA, it was closer to 85-89. According to Jon Heyman, he was able to add a couple MPH on his fastball which should be intriguing for a number of teams. He was shown to have bulked up this off-season, which probably helped with his potential resurgence.

Why shouldn’t the Cardinals take a chance on Lincecum?

He has shown in the past that he can be elite, but that time has passed. While he was able to add some velocity back, his stuff isn’t what it was. But, if he can stay healthy, he could definitely help the Cardinals in the bullpen or as a depth piece in the rotation. I’m on board with giving Lincecum an opportunity. He took it upon himself to get into better shape and so far it looks to have shown.

If he is willing to sign a team friendly contract, sign him. It cannot hurt to add depth, especially on a guy who has succeeded greatly in the past.
