Home Baseball Muñoz Earns His Spot

Muñoz Earns His Spot

by Aaron Mullins

Every year there seems to be a player that ends up making the roster but nobody expected. This season it was Yairo Muñoz.  This kid earned it.

So turns out that Yairo Munoz and I also share a birthday, and now he has been informed he will be on the Cardinals to start the season. That’s pretty sick. #STLCards

He is listed as a shortstop, but has played 2B, 3B, CF, and RF during his time in the Minors. The Cardinals have a habit of adding “utility” players, like Skip Schumacher, Daniel Descalso, Greg Garcia, Jedd Gyorko, and Matt Carpenter, so Muñoz is no different.  He played lights out all spring batting .375 with 3 home runs and a ridiculous 1.048 OPS, which has earned himself a spot on the club.

I’m not the only person who had to google who Muñoz was when he was acquired in the Piscotty trade, but I’m glad that I did.  He had arguably his best season in the Minor Leagues last year spending time in both AA and AAA for Oakland. Combined, he had a .300/.330/.464 slash line with 13 HR’s and 22 SB’s. He seems to be a very versatile player that should add to the depth of the Cardinals bench. I think he will be a valuable asset this coming season, and I wish him the best of luck.

Thanks for reading.
