Billikens Defeat Hawks To Take First A-10 Series

by SLU Baseball

SAINT LOUIS – [BOX SCORESaint Louis University Baseball continued its NCAA-leading win streak on Saturday. The Billikens crushed two home runs as they tied the team record for consecutive wins with 13 in a 7-3 win over Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.

Saint Louis (14-7, 2-0 A-10) trailed briefly after St. Joe’s took an early lead in the first. Mark Giacolone led-off with a walk and advanced to third on a single from Matt Maul to put the lead run 90 feet away with no outs. Right fielder Charlie Concannon followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the home team an early lead.

The Billikens responded in the top of the second. A walk to Jake Garella and a pitch that hit James Morisano were responsible for the first two base runners. The pair advanced to second and third thanks to a wild pitch which allowed Cole Dubet to knock in the first two runs. The second baseman drove a pitch through the right side of the infield, which scored both runs, and made it a 2-1 Saint Louis advantage.

In the eighth, the Billikens extended the lead, which became the key to the game. Aaron Case tripled to lead-off the inning and scored via a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 lead before Alex King posted another with one swing. The Saint Louis shortstop knocked his second home run in of the year and gave his team a 4-1 lead.

St. Joe’s made it a one run game in the bottom half. A passed ball and an error allowed the Hawks to come within one as the game advanced to the ninth.

Cole Dubet had a big day at the plate, and put the game away in the top of the ninth. The Billiken second baseman cracked his first home run of the season, fourth of his career and sealed the game for the team in blue.

Dubet finished with two hits and four RBI, a new career-high for RBI in a game.

Jackson Wark had a solid day and grabbed his fourth win in a six inning effort. The junior allowed just two hits and recorded three strikeouts in his outing.

Luke Sommerfeld tossed an inning and two-thirds and allowed two runs, none of which were earned as he continued to be one of the top relievers in the Billiken bullpen.

Saint Louis added another run in the top of the ninth as the team tied the record for consecutive wins in program history.

The Billikens try to set a new record for consecutive wins on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. as Drew Reveno is set to take the hill.
