Houston Lassoes Skate To Thrill Sweep

(ST. CHARLES, MO) This past weekend, the St. Chux Derby Chix hosted the fifth annual “Skate to Thrill” invitational at Lamborghini Gold Coast Athletic Centre and, as expected, there were plenty of thrills to be found.

In the eight-team, twelve-game event recognized by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the highest-ranked league appearing recorded an impressive three-game sweep.

Houston Roller Derby, ranked #37 by the WFTDA, notched victories over #50 No Coast (286-110), # 58 Happy Valley (292-106) and #93 Twin City (703-166). The Texans’ overwhelming win over Champaign, Illinois-based Twin City on Saturday marked the fifth time historically that a team has scored over 700 points in a WFTDA-sanctioned game. With the trifecta, Houston improved to 4-2.

Salem, Utah’s Happy Valley Derby Darlins claimed a Sunday morning rankings’ upset over No Coast, 179-178, en route to a 2-1 weekend finish that included a 257-113 triumph over #126 Connecticut.

Orangeville, a first-time entrant from Ontario, Canada, also finished the weekend 2-1 with victories over Twin City (344-94) and #145 Dark River Derby Coalition (267-76) while Connecticut Roller Derby notched wins over Akron(303-77) and Dark River (228-100) to leave Skate to Thrill 2-1.

No Coast, Dark River and Twin City each finished the weekend 1-2 while Akron was winless but competitive during their three-game set.

Most Valuable Player awards were awarded to each League:

Akron: Rosa Mariposa

Connecticut: Sinnin’ Sonic

Dark River: La Frostina

Happy Valley: Valkyrie Vixen

Houston: Slayer Moon

No Coast: Bully

Orangeville: Misery Business

Twin City: Natty Slice

No Coast’s Slam was awarded MVP Jammer for the event while teammate Storm as awarded MVP Blocker.
