Redbirds Falter Late in 9-4 Loss to Iowa

by

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Iowa Cubs (Cubs) scored seven times in their final two at-bats and took game three of a four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds 9-4 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

The loss snapped Memphis’ (9-2) five-game winning streak.

Patrick Wisdom and Oscar Mercado homered for the Redbirds, and Iowa (3-6) clubbed three of its own. Wisdom’s was a three-run shot just inside the left-field foul pole and put the Redbirds on top 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, after they trailed for the first three-and-a-half innings. It was his second of the season. Mercado added his first Triple-A homer in the ninth.

Max Schrock finished 3-for-5 for Memphis, and Rangel Ravelo entered as a defensive replacement and went 2-for-2 with a double.

The Redbirds’ 3-2 lead held until the eighth inning, when Iowa plated four runs on five hits off Arturo Reyes. The Cubs added three more on three hits in the ninth facing Sean Gilmartin.

Mercado’s home run came leading off the ninth inning.

On a 42-degree day, the two teams combined for 23 hits. Memphis was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base.

Memphis and Iowa conclude their series, and the Redbirds’ seven-game homestand, tomorrow morning at 11:05. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com/tickets.
