Gomber Ties Franchise Record with 16 Strikeouts; Redbirds Sweep Iowa

by

Austin Gomber tied the franchise record with 16 strikeouts, and the Memphis Redbirds (15-4) scored three runs in the first inning and finished a three-game sweep of the Iowa Cubs (Cubs) with a 3-0 win Monday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gomber whiffed 16 in 8.0 innings of work, and he did not issue a walk. An incredible 85 of his 112 pitches went for strikes, 75.9 percent, and after the first three Cubs of the game reached based he retired 16-straight hitters into the sixth inning. The 16 strikeouts matched Lance Lynn for the franchise’s single-game record, with Lynn fanning 16 in the playoffs at Oklahoma City on Sept. 10, 2010.

The 16 punchouts came in Gomber’s fourth-career Triple-A start and bettered his previous career high of 11.

The Redbirds accounted for all of the game’s scoring in the first inning, when Oscar Mercado doubled and scored on a Max Schrock single before Yairo Munoz clubbed a two-run home run a couple of batters later. Munoz finished 2-for-4 with the two RBI, and Schrock was 2-for-3 with a walk.

After Gomber’s day was done, Mike Mayers came on and retired the Cubs on six pitches in the ninth inning to pick up the save.

Memphis now returns to AutoZone Park for nine games from WednesdayThursday, May 3, after the season’s first off-day tomorrow. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visitwww.memphisredbirds.com/tickets.
