Grizzlies Win Third Straight, Sweep Boomers

by

SAUGET, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies (3-0) finished off a sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers with a 5-1 win Sunday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

With the victory, the Grizzlies have their first 3-0 start since the 2010 season.

Grizzlies starter Max MacNabb had a stellar outing: He tossed six innings, allowed only one earned run and struck out seven. All three Grizzlies starters this weekend threw a minimum of five innings while allowing two or fewer runs.

The Grizzlies only trailed for one full inning after an RBI single from Casey Scoggins gave the Boomers (0-3) a 1-0 lead in the third. That was also the only inning the Grizzlies trailed all series long.

New Grizzlies first baseman Trae Santos gave Gateway the lead right back with a towering two-run home run that completely left the ballpark in the fourth.

Gateway then added to its lead in the 6th with three unearned runs. Jonathan PironJoel McKeithan and Jeff Cardenas drove in those runs for the Grizzlies.

After they were 7-42 when allowing the first run a year ago, the Grizzlies improved to 1-0 in that situation this year afte Schaumburg struck first Sunday night.

Coming up next, the Grizzlies will hit the road for Washington, Pennsylvania, to take on the Wild Things in a three-game series starting Tuesday. They’ll follow that with a three-game set next weekend in Florence, Kentucky, before returning home to take on Lake Erie on May 22.
