Gant Leads Redbirds to Second Shutout in Four Games

by

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – John Gant struck out a season-high eight in 7.0 shutout innings, and three relievers combined to finish off the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park, 6-0, giving the Redbirds (38-26) their second shutout victory in four games and fourth in 15 games since May 26.

Gant’s previous season high for strikeouts was seven, set twice while with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Redbirds hit two home runs on the day, with Rangel Ravelo hitting a two-run shot in the first inning and Adolis Garcia adding a solo blast in the fifth. That was the game’s offense until Memphis scored three times in the bottom of the eighth for some cushion down the stretch.

Ravelo finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Carson Kelly was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Seven Redbirds had at least one of the team’s nine hits on the day. Cesar Puello led Reno by going 4-for-4.

Batting in the bottom of the eighth with a 3-0 lead, the next five Redbirds after a leadoff strikeout reached base, with Kelly’s two-run single providing the club’s fifth and sixth runs of the day.

After Gant, who moved to 5-1 with the win, Andrew Morales gave up a leadoff single in the eighth before a fielder’s choice out and another single. Sean Gilmartin came on and stranded the pair to keep the Redbirds’ 3-0 lead. Edward Mujica finished the ballgame by tossing the ninth inning after Memphis scored the three extra runs.

All 11 Reno hits on the day were singles.

The series, and Memphis’ seven-game homestand, finishes tomorrow afternoon at 12:05. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
