Redbirds See Six-Run Lead Evaporate in Series Finale

by

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Memphis Redbirds (38-27) saw their 6-0 lead after the second inning melt away, capped by the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to take the series finale Monday afternoon at AutoZone Park, 7-6.

The Redbirds led 6-0 until Reno scored three runs in the fifth, and then the Aces added a fourth run in the seventh and three in the ninth. Greg Holland took the loss after surrendering an RBI single to Juniel Querecuto and a two-run home run to Yasmany Tomas in the ninth.

Memphis put up a six-spot in the bottom of the second on the strength of a Rangel Ravelo grand slam, which was his second home run in two games. But after that inning Reno held Memphis scoreless, with the Redbirds leaving a runner on base in the eighth and the bases loaded in the ninth. Alex Mejia flew out to right field to end the game and strand the potential tying run on third.

Chris Ellis made his Triple-A season debut on the mound and worked 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits. Hector Mendoza allowed the three runs in the fifth and recorded one out, before Conner Greene and Arturo Reyes pitched 1.2 scoreless frames.

Matt Bowman gave up a run in 2.0 innings of work, and Holland pitched the ninth.

Memphis went 3-4 on its seven-game homestand.

After an off-day, the Redbirds head west for three games at Albuquerque and four at El Paso, before returning to AutoZone Park for four games against New Orleans on Thursday, June 21. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
