REO Speedwagon & Chicago Review

by

What better way to kick off the first official weekend in summer than to be at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. Chicago & REO Speedwagon made their 7th stop right here in St. Louis on June 23rd. REO took the stage and the crowd was drawn in, almost like a trance, probably the same atmosphere as when the band first started in the early 70’s. Among the hits of the evening were, “Can’t Fight this Feeling,” “Time for Me to Fly,” and of course “Keep on Loving You.”

I grew up listening to this music and I knew they were good, but I never imagined with the stage presence, they would be this amazing. It was my first time seeing them live, first I was worried because nearly everyone there, were my parents age. Great music and showmanship kept every generation that night rockin’ along. REO ended with “Listen to Her Heart”, a tribute to Tom Petty. Lead vocalist Kevin Cronin stated, “We are living proof that rock and roll will keep you young forever,” and I witnessed living proof of that.

As the sun was setting and the temperature was cooling off, Chicago made their appearance and changed the pace of the evening. They played songs from there album Chicago II which included: “Movin’ In,” “Wake Up Sunshine,” and “Anxiety’s Moment.” From the bass, trumpet, saxophone, woodwinds and percussion, it felt as though you were in a nightclub listening and becoming one with the band. They ended the evening with greatest hits from throughout the years. Same genre but two totally different but equally awesome vibes!
